Ecological Agriculture

Top Bananas is RDT’s flagship of organically grown banana brand. They are produced without petrochemical pesticides or fungicides and follow zero-carbon objectives across the value chain, from farm practices to logistics. The result is a healthier, better-tasting product with a significantly lower greenhouse-gas footprint.

Ecuador is the largest exporter of bananas in the world. Through Top Bananas and the Eco-Agro program, RDT’s objective is for Ecuadorian bananas to lead not only in volume and quality, but also in climate solutions. 

 RDT sources, invests in and promotes Ecuadorian cacao, widely recognized as among the best in the world. Scientific studies trace the origins of cacao to the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our cacao is produced primarily by small family farms, and the Eco-Agro program supports both improved farm incomes and environmental standards along the value chain. 

Globally, cattle are responsible for an estimated 11 percent of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions, largely through methane from digestion and manure. Happy Cow focuses on producers that adopt environmentally and socially progressive practices to reduce this footprint.

These include improved feed formulations such as methane-reducing seaweed blends from seaweed farms RDT is helping to promote along the Ecuadorian coastline, and the use of non-invasive, non-petrochemical treatments (for example aloe-vera based creams) to protect animal health. In RDT field studies, these practices have increased dairy production from around 5 liters to approximately 14 liters per cow per day, allowing producers to grow output without proportionally increasing herd size.

 Ecuador is the world’s largest exporter of farm-raised shrimp. Many farms still rely on diesel generators to pump water, creating significant environmental impacts. Happy Seafood supports producers in the transition to on-site and off-site renewable energy solutions and in implementing zero-carbon certification methodologies for their products. 

Fresh Air Fruit & Veggies extends the Top Bananas principles to a wider basket of products. RDT sources, invests in and promotes zero-carbon fruits and vegetables such as pineapples, passion fruit, guanábana, dragon fruit (pitahaya) and plantains. These crops are grown under environmentally and socially responsible practices and integrated into Eco-Agro’s low-carbon supply and certification program.
