Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy is a renewable energy source because heat is continuously produced inside the earth.  We use Geothermal heat rising from the different layers of the earth to generate clean electricity.  The present exploitation of geothermal resources in Ecuador is restricted to bathing resorts, balneology and swimming pools. The total geothermal potential of the country is 3000 MWe. Nothing unusual, considering the fact that the country is traversed by more than 40 active volcanoes.

•The total geothermal power generation potential in Ecuador is estimated at 3000 MWe with approximately 133 MWe of power generated in the three most advanced geothermal prospects.

•Power generation, direct applications, public incentives and clean funding mechanisms are essential for the success of geothermal energy projects in Ecuador.

•Approximately 162,000 t of CO2 eq. per year greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided.

•Annually, we can save 486,500 barrels of crude oil imports, which is equivalent to 24.3 million USD per year.

Ecuador has approximately 70 identified geothermal systems, many of which are located in the volcanic zones of the Sierra. Although Ecuador's geothermal potential has been recognized for many years, not a single project has yet been developed. The country is planning geothermal development of up to 50 MW by 2026. RDT’s team is currently reviewing various sites, technologies and projects in Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras.
